No NICS Available after Mondo iso Boot

Reported by: craigj Owned by: Bruno Cornec
Priority: normal Milestone: 2.2.9.5
Component: mondo Version: 2.2.9.4
Severity: normal Keywords:

Description

SLES 11 SP1 on DL580 G6's. After booting from the iso, no NICS are seen nor can be configured. Source system uses bnx2 driver and that is loaded on target machine. Doesn't work. Using NFS for image iso's.

I tried booting from an older iso from another older server. With that one, I was able to get a NIC configured, but I couldn't figure out how to proceed with the restore. Help!

I also found this in the dmesg output on the target:

bnx2: Can't load firmware file "bnx2/bnx2/mips-09-5.0.0.j9.fw" bnx2 0000:17:00.0: PCI INT B disabled bnx2: probe of 0000:17:00.1 failed with error -2

Status: newassigned

Could you indicate to me where are these FW located on the original machine please ?

mindi *is* backuping some FW already (under /lib/firmware) but may miss the others placed elsewhere.

Ignore that last post.

By the way, since I can't cut and paste from the iLo, I typed (incorrectly) that output of dmesg. It should have read:

bnx2: Can't load firmware file "bnx2/bnx2-mips-09-5.0.0.j9.fw" bnx2 0000:17:00.0: PCI INT B disabled bnx2: probe of 0000:17:00.1 failed with error -2

The file is in /lib/firmware on the source system:

a300s014:/ # find / -name *.fw -print ... /lib/firmware/2.6.32.12-0.7-default/bnx2/bnx2-mips-09-5.0.0.j9.fw ...

I went back and booted from an iso created at SLES 11 SP0 and it works. How can we debug between the two images?

comment:6 by craigj, 13 years ago

Is there anything I can do to assist in debugging this issue? Going forward we're using SLES 11 SP1 and I really need this to work without having to apply oddball workarounds. Thanks!

I think there are differences in the way SLES 11 SP0 and SP1 handle FW from what you report.

Are the FW at the exact same location ? Are they always under the kernel version name subdir ? Is there a new tool introduced to load this FW that wasn't required before and may miss in our file list ?

If you can restore from the SLES 11 SP0, could you get from that run the restored /var/log/mondoarchive.log please and attach it here.

In fact you also need the latest beta of mindi to have support for FW files !! In the 2.0.7.5 it's not there.

So please could you retry with the latest beta version available at ftp://ftp.mondorescue.org/test. Please test and report back. TIA.

Haven't had a chance to try the mindi beta yet but I do have this info for you including the attachment.

I had to play some games to find an SLES11SP0 machine. We have some in Germany but not the US.

The FW on SP1 is always at: /lib/firmware/2.6.32.12-0.7-default

The FW on SP0 is always at: /lib/firmware/2.6.27.19-5-default

I don't know of any special tools at 11 SP 1 for loading firmware. We just use modprobe like we always have if needed.

Attached please find a mondoarchive.log from one of our servers in Germany. I can't vouch for the contents but I do know it is SLES 11 SP0.

Thanks!

Craig

The latest version of mindi worked. mindi-2.0.7.6-0.20110128002916.sles11.x86_64.rpm

The only odd thing it did was map the ethX interfaces to higher numbers, but I don't care.

Thanks - this is great news!
