|---|
| 34 | History</title>
|---|
| 35 | <para>Mondo Rescue was created in December 1999 as a utility to
|---|
| 36 | clone Linux/Windows installations. Norton Ghost would not do the
|---|
| 37 | job, and my boss wanted to jump on the Linux bandwagon. So, I wrote
|---|
| 38 | a few scripts and shoehorned them into the latest Linux-Mandrake
|---|
| 39 | CD. Since that time, Mondo grew into a disaster recovery suite for
|---|
| 40 | Linux and Windows. Mondo forced me to learn about the kernel, its
|---|
| 41 | initrd initial ramdisk, modules, library dependencies, disk
|---|
| 42 | partitioning, and the myriad differences between the Top 10 Linux
|---|
| 43 | distributions.</para>
|---|
| 44 | <para>The first formal release was made on February 18th, 2000.
|---|
| 45 | Mondo is currently one of the top five Linux backup/restore
|---|
| 46 | programs. Mondo has been compared favorably to ArcServe, Arkeia and
|---|
| 47 | BRU. Although Mondo lacks the more advanced, enterprise-level
|---|
| 48 | features of ArcServe and Arkeia, for workstations and small- to
|---|
| 49 | medium-size servers it is ideal because it is small, fast,
|---|
| 50 | efficient, stable, comes with source code, and is being actively
|---|
| 51 | developed and supported.</para>
