Whilst troubleshooting the issue I found an online thread suggesting another user was having the exact same issue and was also using CentOS 6.5 so this may be an issue unique to this distro. I have tried various options to resolve this (including but not limited to changing the ISO size) but the backup fails at the exact same point every time.
